I like a picture book with lots of details to talk about on each page, to promote vocabulary. Loved to read "The Good Morning Book" and "The Good Night Book" by Eloise Wilkins to my children when they were 12 - 24 months old. This is a great gift for our friends' new baby, who has a mom from Chicago and a dad from Tokyo. She will be learning to speak both English and Japanese, and will sometimes live in Japan and sometimes in America or London. Lots to look at and talk about in either language --- furniture, school, holidays, food --- but it's not a vocabulary book, it has a story. It's written in English, but you could look at the pictures and talk about the things in Tokyo in Japanese after you've read the English sentences on the page. Exactly what I was looking for!!
My son will visit Japan for the first time next month, and I was looking for a way to teach him simple concepts that would help him organize his ideas and expectations about Japan. This book accomplishes a surprising amount in very few pages and words. While I appreciate the way the book directly addresses holidays and traditions, it's the subtle things that helped me to talk about cultural differences with my son. For example, the book mentions that the little girl will start second grade, and shows a picture of two second grade girls walking home from school alone. I pointed out to him that in Japan, the streets are safer, and children generally go places independently from a very young age. This both scared and excited him, and I promised that he could roam independently only when and as he felt comfortable. It's often the little things that we want and need to discuss with kids. This book has plenty of them.
I purchased this book my daughter who was 6 years old at the time. She is half Japanese and we were going to visit her grandparents in the summer. I wanted to prep her for this trip to Japan and we read lots of books about Japan and Japanese culture. This was a very easy book and had lots of good information. I must say some of the pictures (drawings) were of very old Japanese life style and most of the people in Japan (unless you go to country side) don't live like that or don't have houses like that, but that's OK. This is just a learning tool. My daughter learned quite a bit and she taught herself some Kanji (Chinese character) from this book.
Bought it as a gift for some friends and they absolutely loved it. Its detailed and very thought provoking for children, as well as interesting for adults. A great way to travel to Tokyo from the comfort of your sofa.
This is a great book with which to introduce a child to Japan, things Japanese, and the Japanese language. The age range for enjoyment and enrichment is probably ages four through ten, which is unusual. This book will be read many times over, the art work is lovely, and it is an incredible buy.
Fun book for parents looking to teach kids about Japan. Cute characters and illustrations and very informative! My daughter never gets tired of it.
Muly son goes on snout Tokyo and this book is perfect for educating him about it. Thanks!
