This book is written in a friendly, accessible almost "folksy" style in an attempt to demystify evaluating published research. If you are like me and the word "statistics" makes your eyes cross then this book is for you. There are very few formulas, he doesn't cover every possible test and variation. Instead he outlines a systematic approach to reading critically and discusses the positives and negatives for the various types of literature reports. By the end of the book you will not be an expert on statistics but you will be more confident about analyzing journal articles.
This is a useful companion for all physicians who are interested in evidence-based medicine. I know all are! Though, I have learned biostatistics in my medical school and public health school, this book helps in applying that knowledge, in my every day readings. This is more of practical applications which is what we all need in evidence-based analysis. I am happy that I found this book. It gives a lot of logical insights, and helps to do critique in a meaningful way.
great book, used as text for a class on critical reviews of literature - well worth helping someone to think through how to identify good research publications - it teaches perspective without pushing any agenda.
It is quite boring. There are some helpful examples, but overall there are other guides out there to assist the student in interpreting research.
I purchased this book for my Literature Evaluation course in grad school and it has proved to be extremely helpful and beneficial. I've talked to some of the upperclassmen who purchased the book last year and they still use it on rotations and for journal clubs. From my understanding, none of the upperclassmen were willing to sell their books because they felt it was such a valuable resource for them. If you spend time actually trying to understand the material in the book, it will be of great benefit to you. One of the great things about it is the use of an abundant amount of examples from studies and trials to outline the points made by the authors. This really helps facilitate better understanding of the concepts presented. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning how to critically evaluate studies and trials for the purposes of topic discussion, case presentations, or journal clubs.
